What's This?

Sometimes, the difference between two items won’t be much more than the difference in the brand name and the logo on the box. On the other hand, the item in question may be of superior quality but how much of this excess price is due to the actual performance and which portion of it is determined by the brand name alone. One of the best examples of this is the online argument regarding the cost-effectiveness of the latest Samsung and Apple smartphones.

Nonetheless, while the people who argue this would be ready to buy LG or Huawei, not a lot of them would buy a phone of a brand that they’ve never heard of. The reason we used the example of smartphones is due to the fact that it is quite relatable, however, this is not where this story ends. This is also relevant when it comes to office equipment, gadgets, and household appliances, as well, which makes the issue of whether you should go with big, medium-sized or small brands into one of the most important questions of our time.

Luxury appliance brands

One of the most important things you need to keep in mind when purchasing a luxury appliance brands is the fact that this is something you aren’t expected to do every year. A refrigerator can last you anywhere between 8 and 20 years and although there is no general rule, with a renowned brand, you usually get a guarantee of quality. After all, these appliances have a very expensive reputation to maintain.

On the other hand, just because a brand of the device you decide to buy is renowned worldwide doesn’t mean that the appliance in question is too expensive for you. In fact, each of these brands has a wide array of items to choose from, usually in different price ranges.

Do you have to buy new?

Another thing you need to keep in mind is the fact that you don’t have to buy these appliances brand new or fresh from the store. You see, seeing as how a fridge can last you up to two decades, would it be so wrong to buy it second-hand, especially if it is not older than one or two years. By this point, its price would have dropped drastically and the functionality of the device wouldn’t have time to degrade significantly.

The popularity of big brands also plays a big role in finding servicing centers. For example, if you bought a Samsung made device or appliance, finding Samsung service and repair centers will prove to be easier than you’d think. It’s the same with other big brands out there. While for smaller or even unknown brands, there are general service stations you can turn to, the thing is that in most cases there will be a lack of original parts.

The matter of prestige

When it comes to mobile phones, people are ready and willing to overpay for their phone due to the transparency of this type of product. You see, there are some great smartphones you’ve never heard of like Nextbit Robin or Fairphone 2, that are amazing devices yet a lot of people wouldn’t even consider buying them due to the lack of prestige that comes from devices such as Samsung Galaxy or iPhone.

When it comes to the household appliances, in certain cases the same may apply. However, with appliances functionality probably plays the most important part rather than the name on the front.

In conclusion

At the end of the day, the choice between a big and a small brand isn’t an easy one to make. Sure, sometimes you are paying too much for only a slight edge in functionality but, then again, some people don’t care about the price as long as they are getting the best device that the money can buy. On the other hand, the vast majority of people usually find it for the best to adopt a more frugal approach to the topic at hand.
